What are the best ways to train a one year old dog?

Question by Jessica: What are the best ways to train a one year old dog?
I recently got a small terrier mix breed dog and he is a year and a half old. He is not potty trained and keeps going to the bathroom in the bedroom. No matter how many times I take him out he doesnt go to the bathroom. Another question is how to make him stop barking constantly.Any tips would be helpful.

    For the potty training thing:

This worked for my two yorkies. I got a box… like an upside down laundry hamper. And when they go to the bathroom in the house flip it over so they are trapped with the poop inside the hamper. Close enough to where they have to be right next to it, but not in it…that’s gross. They will freak out most likely but after about 3 minutes let them out and take them outside and repeatedly say your chosen work for outside. Like “outside” or “potty outside” or… i dunno something that you made up like “yard” or something. then let them sit out there for like 3 minutes.

Also, just getting a doggy door works wonders. They actually prefer to go outside, it’s just getting out there that’s hard.

    With the barking:

I make a PSHHT noise really fast and hard everytime they bark annoyingly. They don’t like it and will stop. (saw it on the dog whisperer)..haha. It works but only do it when it’s unnecessary because you want him to bark if someone comes in your house!

When he barks yell at him and say no and when he pees in teh house put him outside and he will learn to pee outside and everytime he pees outside give him a treat my puppy that recently ran away:( was horriable but we started giving him treats everytime he went out to pee outside and then he just started going to the door asking to go out when he had to go and do his buisness

First things first get a crate. When you are not home or asleep the dog goes in the crate. Do not use the crate as punishment though! He might still have accidents here and there but dogs will usually not pee/poop where they sleep. 2nd, 1st thing in the morning, after every meal and before you go to sleep, take him outside. And every 1-2 hours in between. It might take him a while to know what to do once he gets outside. When I first went though potty training with my dog, I would say something like hurry up and walk her back and forth a bit. Constantly doing this day in and day out, they will learn that’s where they have to do their business. Its not going to happen over night. Patience is key. Once he goes outside praise him, take him in and give him a treat. Also I would recommend obedience training. Its a must if you have never trained a dog before. Not sure about the barking thing. Some breeds tend to bark a lot more than others. My dog rarely barks unless she has to go potty.

  • WHO LET THE DOGS OUT!!:

Crate him, if you are not watching him, then crate him. Its not cruel, in fact it makes a dogs feel secure when they’re alone and a dog will not go to the bathroom in the crate, unless you leave him in too long. Take him outside right away when you’re done crating him and be patient and watch him go to the bathroom and praise him with treats and kind words and all that.

Also if he starts sniffing around he’s ready to go. Not only that but he’s probably going in the bedroom because he still sniffs the last time he went there and thinks that’s his “litter box.” Get some deordizing cleaner and clean all the places he has ever went, also close all the door and keep him at a place where you can watch him.

Not only that but he does need a daily schedule like take him out after he wakes up every morning, after he eats, and before he’s ready to go to bed, like that kind of schedule, that way he knows when he should go and you would too.

When a dog bark never yell or tell it to be quiet because he thinks you’re “barking with him.” What i do is just walk away from him or vice versa, get him distracted by doing other things. The one that i really like is telling my dog to sit everytime she barks, when she sits she never barks that might work for you.
